ZeaChem Selects CH2M HILL as EPC Contractor for First Biorefinery

Lakewood, Colo. — February 23, 2009 — ZeaChem Inc., a developer of biorefineries for the conversion of biomass into fuels and chemicals, today announced that is has selected CH2M HILL as the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) Contractor for its first biorefinery and engineering is currently underway. CH2M HILL is a global leader in engineering, procurement, construction, management, and operations for government, civil, industrial, and energy clients. Set to begin construction in 2009, the biorefinery is slated for a proposed site in Boardman, Ore. Funding for the plant will come in part from ZeaChem’s recent funding round totaling $34 million.

“CH2M HILL delivers the horsepower to manage the EPC of ZeaChem’s first biorefinery as we progress toward the deployment of commercial scale facilities,” said James Imbler, president and chief executive officer of ZeaChem. “ZeaChem applies proven technology and equipment that is in service throughout the world in a new way to achieve the highest yield at the lowest cost, and with one of the lowest carbon footprints in the industry.”

As a proven EPC provider across many industries, CH2M HILL’s established partnerships in the energy, chemicals, and renewable energy sectors well position ZeaChem to efficiently build production infrastructure and accelerate the company’s progress toward commercialization. ZeaChem intends to scale up to a commercial scale biorefinery from the first plant design. In addition to CH2M HILL, ZeaChem has also announced collaboration with GreenWood Resources and Valero Energy Corp.

“CH2M HILL provides sustainable solutions to a wide variety of projects and is committed to advancing the alternative fuels industry,” said Wayne Wajciechowski, vice president of biofuel operations at CH2M HILL. “CH2M HILL’s Biofuel Operations team offers ZeaChem its wealth of biofuels industry experience and project execution skills, which consistently deliver innovative and cost-effective technical solutions.”

ZeaChem’s unique and sustainable approach combines the best of biochemical and thermochemical processes to produce 40 percent more ethanol per ton of biomass over any known competitor. This significant yield advantage leapfrogs first-and second-generation ethanol production practices and processes, placing ZeaChem at the forefront of third-generation technology.

Headquartered near Denver, Colo., employee-owned CH2M HILL is a global leader in engineering, procurement, construction, management and operations for government, civil, industrial and energy clients.
