ZeaChem To Spend $40M On New Ethanol Plant

In the world of biofuels – where companies use wood chips, corn husks, switchgrass or other nonfood plants to make fuel – Jim Imbler says ZeaChem Inc. didn’t invent anything.

That was left to millions of years of Mother Nature’s work, creating bacteria that live and work in the bellies of termites around the world.

The bacteria, called acetogen, consume plant matter and churn out acetic acid, which is similar to vinegar. Zeachem marries that biochemical reaction with heat for a thermochemical reaction that results in ethanol and other chemical products for the market.
